Child safety

Safe is the default.

Children come to Luthando App to learn languages — not to talk to strangers. So every social feature starts off for a child, and only a parent or guardian can turn it on. Here's exactly how it works.

Parental controls

Locked until you say so.

Every child account is managed from a guardian's Safety & Controls screen. Each feature below is off by default — you choose what to allow, per child, and you can change your mind anytime.

CHAT

Off, then contacts-only.

A child can never chat with someone you haven't approved. You build the contact list — family, friends, a trusted teacher — and the app enforces it, on every message.

COMMENTS & VIDEOS

You allow it, or it doesn't happen.

Posting comments and uploading Playroom videos are separate switches. Until you enable them, your child watches and learns — nothing more.

LIVE CLASS CHAT

Learn live, chat only if allowed.

Children can join live classes with vetted educators, but the in-class text chat and invites stay disabled unless a guardian turns them on.

PHOTOS & FILES

No media sharing by default.

Sending photos or files in chat is its own permission. Off until a guardian decides otherwise — and even then, only with approved contacts.

Built-in protection

Guardrails that work even when no one is watching.

ALWAYS ON
Personal-info filter

Phone numbers, email addresses and social-media handles are automatically detected and blocked in children's messages and comments — they simply cannot be shared.

ALWAYS ON
Safety reminders

Before a child comments, uploads or joins a live session, the app shows a clear "Stay Safe Online" reminder — keep personal details private, never share your location, and tell a trusted adult if something feels wrong.

ALWAYS ON
Moderated content

Every Playroom video is reviewed by our team before anyone sees it. Comments pass a language filter, and repeat violations lead to a ban — three strikes, out.

ALWAYS ON
Vetted educators

Every educator on Luthando App is identity-checked and approved by our team before they can teach — with documents verified, not just a form filled in.

Questions parents ask

The fine print, in plain words.

Where do I find the parental controls?

Sign in with your parent or guardian account and open Safety & Controls from the menu. You'll see each of your children, with a switch for every social feature and the list of approved contacts.

Who can my child chat with?

Only people you have approved, plus you. There is no way for a stranger to start a conversation with a child — the app blocks it on our servers, not just in the interface.

Can my child use the app with everything switched off?

Completely. Lessons, stories, games and videos all work with every social feature off — that's how new child accounts start, and plenty stay that way.

What happens if something slips through?

Tell us. Email info@luthandoapp.co.za with the word SAFETY in the subject line and a person will act on it as a priority. You can also report content directly in the app.
